If you are a bible believing Christian, then you have to believe that "Capital Punishment" is right and just, that is if you read the bible. The true believer accepts the infallible statements of the word of God to be scientifically accurate, morally correct, infallibly inspired, perfectly preserved, and absolutely unimpeachable.

Before we get into exactly what the bible says about the death penalty, lets look at what man says about it.
I guess you know that all poll results are in direct relation to how much the "news media" has pushed the anti biblical side of whatever the poll is about. The reason for that is very few people read the bible anymore, however even with the liberal "news media", there is still a majority that favors capital punishment. With that in mind, here is the results of the last Gallup poll on this subject, February 24, 2000.

In 1953, 68% favored the death penalty, a number that dropped to as low as 42% in the mid 1960s. In 1978, a year after capital punishment resumed after a number of years in which there were no executions in the United States, 62% of Americans supported the death penalty. That support rose consistently through the 1980s before peaking in 1994, (that's because of the conservative Reagan years) when, 80% of Americans favored the death penalty in murder cases. Since then, the number has gradually fallen back to the current 66% favor, 28% opposed measured in Gallup's February 14-15 survey. (It fell back because of the liberal Clinton years)

What are the reasons most frequently given by those who favor the death penalty? The 66% who favor it were asked to explain why in their own words. Their answers are as follows:

46% give reasons that focus on the "eye for an eye" rationale -- that death is the only punishment that fits the crime of murder, or that it is a fair punishment for murder
12% say it saves the taxpayer money
8% say it is a deterrent for other crimes and sets an example
5% say the criminal deserves it
4% say that by killing the criminal, it keeps him or her from repeating the crime
3% say it is a biblical remedy

There are significant variations in support for the death penalty by demographic and regional category.
Support for the death penalty is higher among

Men than among women
Whites than among non whites
Older Americans than among younger Americans
Southerners than among Americans in the rest of the country
Those with a high school education or less than among more highly educated Americans
Republicans than among Democrats

In Genesis 2:17, the death penalty was instituted when God told Adam,  "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."

The death penalty was applied spiritually to Adam in Gen. 3:6,7 and physically 930 years later in Gen. 5:5.

Before the Noah's flood, the only law concerning capital punishment was, there was no law,
every man did what was right in his own eyes.

 Ge 9:6 Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

God is talking here and not only did He institute the death penalty here, but He had just got through carrying it out on billions of people by drowning them because of their wickedness.

After Noah's Flood and before the Law, God carried out the "Death Penalty" himself in Gen. 19.
 Ge 19:24 ¶ Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire
from the LORD out of heaven;
 De 29:23 And that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom, and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim,
which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:

He also carried out the "Death Penalty" on two brothers,  Ge 38:7 And Er, Judah's firstborn,
was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
 8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
 9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
 10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

 Numbers 35:16 And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
 17 And if he smite him with throwing a stone, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
 18 Or if he smite him with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer:the murderer shall surely be put to death.
 Numbers 35:31 Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.

This is the reason there are so many murders now, the murderer is NOT SURELY put to death.
If we as a nation went by what Solomon, the wisest man in the bible (excluding the Lord Jesus Christ) said in Ecclesiastes,  there wouldn't be as many murders, assaults, thefts, rapes, etc. now.  Ecc. 8:11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

It's not "Gun Control" that we need, it's "Heart Control" because,  Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
 Mt 15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts,
false witness, blasphemies:

 Acts 25:11 For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar.

The Apostle Paul recognizes the right of Government to take life in Acts 25:11.

 Romans 13:1-4 ¶ Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:  4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

The Government is God's tool to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

 1 Peter 2:13-15 ¶ Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; 14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.  15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:

According to the above verses, if you want to be in God's will, make sure the Government punishes evil doers.
Also in verse 15, the people who advocate doing away with "Capital Punishment" are "ignorant fools".
 

The "Second Death" Penalty
 Re 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

The above verses are for NOT doing something;

John 16:7 ¶ Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:  9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;

This is the only sin that you will get the "second death" penalty, verse 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me.

The deterrent to keep a person out of the lake of fire is in Matthew 10:28
Mt 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Did you know that the "Death Penalty" that the Lord Jesus Christ submitted to is the ONLY WAY for you to escape the "Second Death Penalty".

John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
